The 8th of March marks International Women's Day. It is an occasion to reaffirm a fundamental truth: there can be no full democracy without the free, safe and effective political participation of women.
Colombia is in the midst of a crucial election period to strengthen its democracy. The commemoration of this day is an opportunity to highlight the call to ensure that women in all their diversity can exercise their political rights without fear of violence, intimidation or stigmatisation.
Participation cannot depend on individual courage; real guarantees of safety and protection must support it. This also implies effective access to justice.
Promoting free and safe elections for women is a condition for sustainable peace and a more just and inclusive society.
On this day, the Mission renews its commitment to a democracy in which women participate fully, with a voice and without fear.
