Armel Caracas was the only peace signatory in the country elected in the 2023 regional elections. For the last six months, he has been mayor of Cumaribo, Vichada, one of Colombia’s largest and most remote municipalities. Getting there is one of the many challenges that Cumaribo faces.

The United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia is supporting Armel’s process as well as other peace signatories undergoing reintegration in Cumaribo.

Prior to his election, Armel focused part of his reintegration process on working to ensure that the municipality’s youth and children found opportunities amid great challenges through sport.  

“Our main challenge is to deliver to the people of Cumaribo. During our campaign, we talked about creating a new social reality, and we are going to work to build projects that translate into new living conditions for the people,” said Armel Caracas, stressing that the main goal is to honor his promises to the people and work for a better social reality.
