Bogotá, 30 October 2026. Today, the United Nations Security Council renewed the mandate of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia for a further year through resolution 2833 (2026).
The decision, unanimously adopted, reaffirms the support that the Security Council, and the United Nations as a whole, has extended to Colombia for nearly a decade in the implementation of the 2016 Final Peace Agreement.
During the session on the mandate renewal, Council members expressed their support for progress towards peace and security in Colombia and for the role of the United Nations in the country.
Each year, the Security Council reviews the mandate of the Verification Mission. On this occasion, the Council has made adjustments to the mandate, as it has done in the past, as part of its responsibilities. Under the renewed mandate, the Mission will focus on two priorities essential to consolidating the Peace Agreement: the social, political and economic reintegration of peace signatories, and security guarantees for signatories, communities and organizations throughout the country. The Security Council accepted the proposal put forward by the Government of Colombia and, as a result, the verification of comprehensive rural reform will no longer form part of the Mission's mandate.
In its resolution, the Security Council recognizes “the changing dynamics of the conflict in Colombia”. It also “emphasizes the importance of strengthening State presence and territorial development”, including through the implementation of the Peace Agreement and complementary security policies, as well as efforts to address illicit drug production and trafficking and illegal mining.
The Security Council also acknowledged “the Government's commitment to restoring State control over territory and strengthening State presence in the territories, while underscoring the importance of the Mission's presence on the ground”, particularly in conflict-affected regions. Through its presence on the ground, the Mission will continue to support State efforts to extend its reach across the territories and deliver tangible benefits to the population, while accompanying communities and their organizations in their peacebuilding efforts.
The Mission reaffirms its commitment to supporting the implementation of the Peace Agreement through continued close cooperation with the Government, State institutions, the high contracting party to the Agreement, communities—particularly victims—and Colombian society as a whole, in pursuit of a peaceful, secure and prosperous present and future.
