TRIPOLI - UNSMIL welcomes the transfer of Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri from German to ICC custody. His first appearance before the Court yesterday is an important step towards justice and accountability for countless victims of serious human rights abuses in Libya. El Hishri is suspected to have committed, ordered or overseen crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, torture, rape and sexual violence in Libya from February 2015 to early 2020.

UNSMIL urges Libyan authorities and all UN member states to fully cooperate with the Court, in line with the Security Council referral of the situation in Libya, including by ensuring full access for ICC investigators and executing outstanding arrest warrants.

Ensuring accountability for mass atrocities is a critical foundation for sustainable peace. The Mission reaffirms its commitment to support Libya’s efforts to advance human rights and end cycles of impunity.
