TRIPOLI—The United Nations Support Mission in Libya expresses its profound sorrow following the tragic airplane crash that claimed the lives of General Mohamed Al-Haddad, Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army, and his colleagues during their return from an official mission to Ankara.
The Mission also mourns the loss of Lieutenant General Al-Fitouri Ghribil, member of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission and who played a key role in the signing of the 2020 Ceasefire Agreement; Brigadier General Mahmoud Al-Qattiyou, Director of the Military Manufacturing Authority; Mr. Mohamed Al-Assawi Diab, Adviser to the Chief of the General Staff; Mr. Mohamed Omar Ahmed Mahjoub, photographer at the Media Office; and flight crew.
UNSMIL pays tribute to the dedicated service of General Al-Haddad and his companions. During his tenure as Chief of the General Staff, General Al-Haddad was a steadfast advocate for the unification of Libya’s military and civilian institutions, peace and stability for a strong Libya. He was a professional officer who put national interests first and a patriot who loved his country.
The Mission extends its deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the families of the deceased, their colleagues, the 5+5 JMC, and the people of Libya. UNSMIL stands in solidarity with all those affected by this great tragedy at this difficult time.
